Though many states have legalized online gambling, others remain slow in adopting it. New Jersey led the charge with its successful launch that inspired hope that other states would follow. Unfortunately, lawmakers remain unwilling to move ahead with internet casinos that would enable gamblers to wager on more than sports and horse racing; though profits might be attractive but concerns have been voiced regarding lack of consumer protections.
New Mexico had long been one of the more reluctant states when it comes to online gambling, but that all changed in 2021 when they passed a law legalizing sports betting and federal authorities reinterpreted the Wire Act, opening the way for more states to provide legal sports gambling services.
Mississippi could soon see an expansion of its sports betting market. Last year, Mississippi launched a retail sportsbook through DraftKings partnership and is among the top five markets nationwide for betting on sports. A conservative state like Mississippi may make expanding sports betting difficult; however, legislators have shown some interest in considering such initiatives.
Montana could make strides toward increasing sports betting options in 2023 when Intralot begins offering online wagering to Montana residents. Montana boasts several tribal casinos as well as Churchill Downs race track. Although Montana has historically opposed gambling activities, things could change once Intralot launches online wagering services for Montanan residents in 2023.
Oregon is home to several land casinos, but residents do not currently have the ability to place bets online. That may change soon; Oregon lawmakers are currently debating a bill which would permit sales of virtual cards online.
Rhode Island has not experienced much success when it comes to legalizing casino gaming; however, recently passing a bill that permits online poker could provide them with an opportunity. While we remain uncertain as to its impact or effectiveness in taking full advantage of this step forward.
Massachusetts only recently passed its sports betting legislation, yet is taking its time before adding casino play as well. While New Jersey and Pennsylvania may influence Massachusetts, its strong anti-gambling stance may prevent a quick decision being made on any potential expansion plans.
Hawaii remains one of the only two states which does not permit online gambling of any sort, and this trend is unlikely to change anytime soon. Hawaii has long been considered an anti-gambling state. There was some interest expressed during Hawaii’s regulation session held January of 2022; however, their attempts did not gain momentum and lawmakers may attempt to legalise gambling again at a later time.
